You Can Drink Your Coffee, And Wear It Too

We can pretty much all agree-waking up to that wonderful aroma of your Nespresso machine is a great way to start the day. For many people (including us here at Otavea) cannot go through the day without a good cup of coffee. But did you know that you can use that coffee to help beautify your hair and skin as well? It’s true–one of the world’s favorite beverages not only boosts your energy level and your mood, but as it’s loaded with powerful antioxidants that help improve your skin and your hair.

Here’s a quick breakdown/science lesson-our bodies are constantly battling against free radicals. Those molecules have unpaired electrons that can damage crucial cell structures like proteins and DNA. Antioxidants to the rescue! They donate electrons to the free radicals, effectively disarming them. Makes sense?Think about this like a trade-off between the two; electrons from the antioxidants to the free radicals, in exchange for the sake of your body’s health.

While drinking coffee already brings these benefits, your body can also soak them up in reverse, which double down the good stuff, yay! Here’s just a shortlist of the benefits that you could reap from having coffee on your skin.

Brighten

Not only does coffee lift your mood, but it can also make your skin shine brighter than a diamond. Okay, that might be a little bit of a stretch, but we’re not totally wrong. The caffeine properties stimulate blood flow, and when applied to your face, it can make you appear radiant and bright, and well, awake. Like you actually got the recommended 8 hours of sleep last night.

Tighten

Probably one of the more well-known benefits of coffee is the “shrinking” aspects it has, which basically means it likes to dehydrate fat cells. For example, creams and serums that contain coffee can minimize the appearance of cellulite, giving that tightening effect on the outside. Boom, no one has to know that you didn’t get those legs from visiting the gym once a year.

Soften

When you hear “exfoliation” everyone’s immediate thoughts can range from chemical (which we hate!) to the World’s Best All Natural and Organic Sugar Scrub *ahem* Otavea *ahem*. But when you add coffee, (specifically grounds), it gives you extra exfoliation that you’ve always needed, without over-doing it. Providing you with that brand new baby-soft skin that you’ll make everyone feel after the shower.

Protection

These goodies can also reach into your hair as well. Hair products that contain caffeine add some extra strength to prevent breakage that no one wants, while providing shine and growth-boosting properties that everyone needs. Not to mention that amazing smell that it leaves behind in your mane.

Aging

Another well-known advantage of coffee in skincare is the battle it fights against premature aging. Though the main uses show blood flow and stimulation, it can actually reduce redness and swelling, as well as inflamed skin, thanks to the powerful antioxidants mentioned at the beginning of this post. Wow- is there anything our beloved cup of Joe can’t do?

Knocking back one cup of coffee for your body and one for your soul can seem too good to be true. However, as we and many experts agree, the beauty and wellness benefits of our beloved wonder ingredient shows otherwise. So drink up, beautiful. You’ll soon be on your way to becoming a Starbucks regular (just for the sake of your skin, of course).
